Cowboy Poet, Cowboy Poets of Utah Founding Member & President

Brenda “Sam” Deleeuw is a trailblazer in the world of cowboy poetry, earning her place as one of the first award-winning female poets to capture the spirit of the American West. Her work, rooted in real-life ranching and cowboy experiences, has made a lasting impact on the Western literary scene. But Sam’s contributions go beyond her poetry—she has led a life defined by a deep love for horses, a commitment to education, and a lifetime of service to her community.

Born in Blackfoot, Idaho, Sam’s connection to the Western lifestyle began at an early age on her family’s small farm. She inherited her passion for horses from her father, setting the stage for a lifetime of dedication to ranching, rodeo, and the western way of life.

Sam’s impact as a poet has been nothing short of extraordinary. As a founding member of the Cowboy Poets of Utah, she was among the first female poets to earn recognition in a field traditionally dominated by men. Her unique perspective as a rancher’s wife and her mastery of storytelling have garnered her numerous accolades, including the International Western Music Association Utah Chapter Female Poet of the Year award five times. Sam’s books, such as “Ladies, Horses and Cowboys” and “Cowboy Seasons-Poetry of the West,” renect her ability to weave together the triumphs and struggles of Western life with both humor and heart. Her poetry, born from her own experiences, resonates with audiences far and wide, making her a beloved figure in the cowboy poetry community.

But Sam’s legacy extends far beyond the stage. From her early years growing up with horses in Idaho to her retirement from over 30 years of service in the Utah Juvenile Court system, Sam’s life has been one of tireless dedication to her family, her community, and the Western lifestyle. She has mentored countless youth through her work with the 4H horse program and played a pivotal role in the Sanpete County Fair, ensuring the continuation of rodeo traditions for future generations. Through it all, Sam’s deep connection to the land and its people has remained unwavering, and her influence continues to ripple through the generations of Western enthusiasts she has touched.
