The Golden Spike Rodeo is one of Utah’s most cherished western traditions and holds the distinction of being the state’s oldest continuously operating rodeo. Since its beginning in 1925 as a three-day event held in conjunction with the Box Elder County Fair, the rodeo has grown into one of the premier rodeo events in the Intermountain West while remaining deeply rooted in the agricultural heritage of Box Elder County.
Today, the Golden Spike Rodeo is a four-day PRCA Playoff Series event that attracts top contestants from across the nation. Its reputation for excellence has been built through outstanding competition, dedicated leadership, and a commitment to providing one of the finest rodeo experiences in the region. The rodeo has earned multiple “Justin Best Footing Awards,” was named the 2021 WPRA Medium Rodeo of the Year, and captured first-place honors in the Wilderness Circuit in 2017 and 2018. For more than a decade, every performance has been sold out, a testament to its popularity and quality.
The Golden Spike Rodeo has never lost sight of its roots. From the early days when local ranchers supplied horses and cattle, to today’s continued involvement of multi-generational ranching families, the rodeo remains a celebration of Utah’s western way of life. Its opening ceremony, featuring the Golden Spike Rodeo Cowgirls carrying the American flag, has become a beloved tradition that honors both patriotism and local heritage.
Beyond the arena, the rodeo serves as a powerful force for good through special nights dedicated to family, patriotism, breast cancer awareness, suicide prevention, and domestic violence awareness. Guided by a passionate volunteer committee, the Golden Spike Rodeo continues to preserve western traditions while creating lasting memories for future generations.
